The holidays are approaching which may mean a break from school but it doesn't have to mean a break from learning! As the colder weather draws in, you may be inclined to spend a little more time indoors, and The Tutoring Center in West Bloomfield would like to help you make use of this time by offering some educational games to play with your kids this winter.

Christmas poems

No doubt your child is keenly awaiting Christmas, so harness this excitement to work on their reading, writing, creative expression and imaginative thinking. Sit down with them and think of things you both associate with Christmas (trees, presents, family, etc.) and ask them to write a poem - perhaps about their perfect Christmas, or a Christmas they’ve loved, or just give them free reign to write anything!

Mazes

Solving mazes is an excellent way for your child to develop their spatial awareness,  problem-solving and patience, and they’re great for getting younger children to practice their hand-eye coordination. Make mazes more engaging by creating your own themed mazes based on your child’s interests (a special Thanksgiving maze in which you have to get the turkey to the table, or a ‘help Santa find his presents’ maze, perhaps).

Modelling and sculpting

Building models out of blocks or sculpting things from play-doh may not on the surface appear to be an ‘educational activity’. However, modelling and sculpting have been shown to be tremendous for the development of your child’s spatial awareness and mathematical thinking. Set them a challenge by providing a picture of something and asking if they can recreate it, or play ‘guess the sculpture’ in which you take turns creating something and guessing what said creations are. You could also include little quizzes about what you’re modelling (if it’s a particular animal you could ask what it eats, where it lives, etc.) to help teach them about virtually any subject.

If the winter weather’s keeping your child indoors, then they’ll have lots of opportunities to read. To encourage them to do so, why not create a reading nook in your home?

If your child seems to be in need of a little extra assistance in any academic area, don’t hesitate to contact The Tutoring Center. Our study programs can help with reading, grammar, math, and more, and our expert staff tailor their approach to suit any learning style, so call (248) 432-7288 to organize tutoring in West Bloomfield today.
